STEPHEN FORTESCUE is Associate Professor in the School of Politics and International Relations, University of New South Wales, Australia. He completed a PhD on Soviet primary party organizations at the Australian National University in 1977. After a number of years working in Soviet-related business he returned to academia, with research appointments at the ANU and the University of Birmingham. His primary research interest then was Soviet science, with monographs being published by Macmillan (1986) and Routledge (1990).
