The foundation for Peter Thorneycroft's political career was laid in the 1940s when, as chairman of the Tory Reform Committee, he guided the formulation of a set of principles which he was to follow for the next fifty years, and which remain as valid for a prospective Conservative Government today as they were then. He went onto discharge with distinction a series of major tasks confided to him: President of the Board of Trade; Chancellor of the Exchequer; Minister of Aviation; Minister of Defence; Secretary of State for Defence; Chairman of the Conservative Party - and Peer of the Realm.
